13 towns to ink pact on common landfill

-
The first town cluster to implement a common sanitary landfill spearheaded by the provincial government will sign a Memorandum of Agreement tomorrow.

This after Governor Gwendolyn Garcia reconsidered an earlier decision to cancel the waste clustering plan of 13 towns in the north because of a reported lack of interest among some of the local chief executives.

Garcia, in a scheduled meeting with the mayors of the 13 northern towns last week, walked out after finding only four mayors came to attend the meeting.

The meeting was supposed to be for the finalization of the establishment of the First Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility in barangay Maslog, Danao City.

The 13 local government units in the first waste management cluster to be implemented are Lapu-Lapu City, Danao City, Mandaue City, Cordova, Liloan, Carmen, Sogod, Tuburan, Consolacion, Compostela, Catmon, Borbon and Tabuelan.

Garcia's administration had allotted P15 million for the said project.

The project was considered urgent since the Department of Environment and Natural Resources is set to strictly implement Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act. - Ferliza C. Contratista
