NMIC: Meat, poultry cheaper this month

Meat and poultry products sold in markets in Central Visayas are generally cheaper this month compared to last month according to the National Meat Inspection Commission of the Department of Agriculture.

NMIC Director Romeo Capa, during the weekly Kapihan sa PIA, said that results from their weekly price monitoring at the different markets in Cebu showed that there is no dramatic increase in prices of meat and poultry products in the province due to the abundant supply of these products. He added that the prices of most of the meat and poultry products even went down this month.

Beef is sold at P145 per kilo in markets this month compared to the September price of P150 per kilo. Pork is being sold at P130 per kilo this month while the price last month was P141 per kilo. Chicken, meanwhile, is sold at P90 in markets compared to the P99 price last month.

In supermarkets, Capa said, the price of beef increased by P2 at P168 per kilo as it was priced at P166 per kilo last September. The price of pork, on the other hand, decreased at P144 per kilo compared to the P146 price last month. The price of chicken also went down this month at P97 compared to the P101.50 price last month. Goat meat or chevon meat, however, increased by P20 at P250 per kilo this month compared to the P230 price last month.

Capa also warned consumers that prices may increase by five percent this Christmas because of the increase in demand.

Nevertheless, he assured consumers that the NMIC and other agencies tasked to monitor prices of goods and basic commodities will continue to do their jobs to prevent overpricing. - Jasmin Uy
