Frat row, jealousy eyed in Akrho man's shooting

Homicide investigators are eyeing fraternity violence and jealousy in the shooting of Alpha Kappa Rho member Paul Ritch Silos in barangay Labangon Friday midnight.

Silos, 18, a sophomore student, was allegedly shot by a certain Manvie Valientos on his way home along with four friends after watching a band concert in sitio Sambag. He is now confined at the Cebu City Medical Center.

Homicide investigator Henry Estoy said the victim stopped by a store to buy cold water when Valientos, who was several meters away with his friends, allegedly shot him with a handgun.

"Ang estorya sa mga tawo didto sa area nga nasuya ang suspect sa biktima. Pag-concert tabis na kuno og tinan-awan sa victim si Valientos," Estoy said.

Witnesses said the suspect just shot Silos twice on his thigh for unknown reason and immediately fled. Responding policemen from the Mobile Patrol Group rushed Silos to the hospital.

Silos told Estoy that he only knew Valientos as a known troublemaker in their barangay, admitting that he and the suspect had quarreled once.

But the victim did not know whether Valientos belongs to another fraternity or that he was just a victim of "paregla" by the suspect.

Since January 2004, the city police have recorded at least 43 fraternity-related incidents, 13 of which involved murder. - Ryan P. Borinaga
