Dep't stores warned over price tag law

An official of the Department of Trade and Industry regional office has warned department stores that sanctions would be imposed on them if they refuse to comply with the price tag law.

Josh Carol T. Ventura, chief of the Trade and Industry Regulatory Division of the DTI-7, said said that department stores should be aware that they are required to put price tags on any article for sale. The price tag is a device attached to a commodity stating the price at which it is offered for sale.

It is needed to provide buyers with adequate information and guide to enable them to compare quality and prices of goods and patronize stores selling quality products at low prices.

The price tag law requires that all consumer products sold in retail to the public shall bear an appropriate price tag, label or marking indicating the price of the article. Such consumer products shall not be sold at a price higher than that stated herein.

Under the law, first offense would mean a fine of not less than P200.00 but not more than P5,000 or by imprisonment of not less than one month but not more than six months or both.

For a repetition of the offense, the business permit and license would be revoked.

Ventura said his agency is closely watching department stores.
