Large-scale estafa: CIDG looking for old records against couple
September 16, 2005 | 12:00am
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group is now perusing its records to confirm reports that a couple arrested in Laguna for large-scale estafa is involved in a similar case filed in 2003.
Gary and Ada Serafin were blamed by the owner of AZ Travel and Visa Consultancy based in Taboc, Mandaue City, of duping about 50 applicants in Cebu alone who were promised a job in New Zealand.
Initial investigation revealed that they had also allegedly deceived other applicants in Zambonga City, Ormoc, Davao and Nueva Ecija.
The fall of the couple came after their local contact Sherina and Leonardo Lorenzo were arrested last June in Mandaue City and charged with estafa. The Lorenzos later squealed on the Serafins so they too were charged with large-scale estafa although at large.
At least two Mandaue City judges issued warrants of arrest against the Serafins last July; judge Ulric Cañete for large scale estafa with no bail and judge Agustin Vestil for estafa with recommended bail of P18,000.
CIDG intelligence chief Rex Derilo told reporters yesterday that they received a report that the Serafins were connected to Lovely and Narciso Bibangco who was arrested by his office for large-scale estafa in 2003.
Derilo said they have to confirm reports that the Bibangcos, who are now detained at the Mandaue City Jail, were the local contact of the Serafins here.
About 300 applicants for jobs abroad were reportedly victimized by the Bibangcos then, Derilo said - Ryan P. Borinaga
