PB defers discussion on Cordova college

The Provincial Board of Cebu has momentarily suspended the approval of the ordinance creating Cordova Public College.

This is in pursuant to a provision in the Local Government Code that a municipality is not allowed to operate colleges, but only tertiary level schools offering technical and vocational courses.

PB member Victor Maambong said the provincial board will invite in the next session Mayor Arleigh Sitoy, Vice Mayor Danilo Sinugbuhan, other town officials, as well as representatives from the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education to shed light on the legality of the operation of a college.

Talisay City was allowed to operate a college with courses other than the technical and vocational courses since it has already attained cityhood with its own charter.
