Despite protests from parents, night classes in public high schools in Cebu City will observe a 5th year by next year.
Cebu City Schools Superintendent Leonilo Oliva sees the need for an additional year in night public high schools to meet the required class days.
"At times when classes are sometimes suspended on Saturdays, we have to do make-up classes on Sundays to complete the required class days. However, I received some complaints from bosses of these working students that Sunday classes come in conflict with the students' work schedules, so we must do something about that," he said.
Oliva also clarified that night classes are for working students in the city. He advised parents whose children are not working to enroll them in a regular class schedule.
Earlier, most parents have reportedly opposed the adding of one more year to the four-year program saying that extra year in high school is added burden to them financially. - Jasmin R. Uy
