Former Cebu first district congressman Jose Gullas wants the breeding, raising, and dispersal of Anglonovian male goats replicated in other towns of the Cebu province to benefit more farmers.
During his term, Gullas conceived of the project as an income-generating activity for his farmer-constituents. Carcar Vice Mayor Roger Montesclaros acknowledged the success of the project as shown by the positive returns it brought to farmer-recipients and their families since the training on breeding and dispersal of goats from Novia, Africa was introduced sometime in 2002.
Montesclaros said that more than 55 families have already benefited from the program. Of the 15 barangays in Carcar, five availed of the breeding of these Anglonovian goats. These barangays are Poblacion III, Liburon, Valladolid, Tuyom and Perrelos.
To recall, there were three Carcaranons who were part of the first batch of recipients - Ernesto Regis, William Racoma and Albert Verano.
The three already received special citation awards last June 25 from Gullas for undertaking such project.
Racoma said that with the help of the program, he was able to disperse more than 15 high-breed goats.
"Dako kaayo og gikatabang kay ang akong duha ka kanding dali ra kaayo nakasanay," Racoma said, adding that goat raising provides for him a good supplementary income because of the increasing price of goat meat in the market.
Racoma pointed out there is a high demand for goat meat, which costs P170 per kilo in the market, making the livelihood of goat raising profitable to breeders.
The Anglonovian goat could weigh as much as 80 kilos upon maturity as compared to the native goat that could only weigh 20 kilos.
Besides, an Anglonovian goat can sustain mating 20 does or female goats a day, thus resulting to a faster rate of reproduction.
