Torres' leg cut off to avoid infection

Suspected robber Ruel Rey Bernes Torres won't live a normal life again.

This after his left leg was eventually amputated Tuesday morning at the Cebu City Medical Center to avoid infection, according to doctors.

Torres sustained a gunshot wound in his left leg after he reportedly shot it out with a team of Cebu City policemen prior to his capture last week in Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur.

CCMC Director Myrna Go said the operation, which was undertaken by Dr. Cris Cecil Abbu, lasted for almost two hours.

When asked after the operation on how he felt with his left leg amputated, Torres only said "nagmahay."

Torres said he has a fever and wanted to get out of the hospital immediately so his wife, Edith, could go back to Tangub City.

It was Edith, a midwife, who convinced him to allow doctors to amputate his leg. Unconfirmed reports said Danny Limotan, a former co-leader in Torres' robbery group, paid for his hospital expenses. But Edith said it was Torres' nephews and nieces who paid for the bills.
