A scout, is courteous

KIDSTUFF - Zaida Marie A. Tambis - The Freeman

“Good morning, everyone!” All the students looked at the boy who greeted everyone in the cafeteria when he entered.

“That guy is such a jolly one. I met him in front of the library one time and he acted like we’ve known each other for ages after that.” “He even greets the janitors whenever he passes by them in the hallway.” These were just some of the comments they made about him.

“Blaire! Have you read this?” Jean showed him a small book.

“Ssshhh… Don’t talk too loud. The librarian might hear you,” he whispered as he looked around. “Yes, I have. It’s a great book actually. You’ll learn a lot about animals from it.”

Jean grinned and tried to secretly place the book in her pocket.

“What are you doing? You’re supposed to check the book out from that counter over there,” Blaire took the book from her and went to the check-out section. “Excuse me, Ma’am. My friend would like to borrow this book.”

The person-in-charge smiled at him. Without Blaire and Jean knowing, she had been watching them on the CCTV monitor. “Thank you for convincing your friend not to sneak the book out from the library.”

At the school cafeteria… “Hello there, Ma’am. Would you mind if I sit with you? All the other tables are occupied,” Blaire asked the lady at a table. Only when she nodded did he put down his tray of food on the table. “Would you like to have some of my sandwich?” he offered her.

The lady looked at him. “You know, it’s the first time that someone asked my permission to share a table with me,” she said. “Normally the other kids would just sit without saying anything. They don’t even notice when they spill their drinks on my things.”

“I’m sorry to hear that, Ma’am. It’s just that my mom taught me to be polite to everyone I meet all the time,” he countered.

One Saturday afternoon, Ms. Bellaflor was hiking with her family. While she was busy looking at some flowers, a boy approached her. “Good afternoon, Ms. Bellaflor.” He took her hand and placed it on his forehead.

She was taken by surprise. She looked at the boy and realized he’s one of the students at the school where she used to work. “What are you doing here, Blaire? And who’s with you?”

He beamed when she mentioned his name. “I’m glad you remember my name, Ma’am. Thank you,” he said. “I am here with the other boy scouts. It’s the first day of our District Camporal.” Ms. Bellaflor smiled when she heard that. “It’s true what they say. A boy scout is courteous, indeed.”
