“Fashion Revolution” Exhibit

PEOPLE PLACES - Flor Ynclino - The Freeman

Mall-goers had the rare opportunity to get a glimpse of sustainable fashion during the recent “Fashion Revolution” Exhibit at the Northwing Atrium of SM City Cebu.

A joint project of the Embassy of Sweden in Manila and SM, the exhibit features Swedish brands’ efforts to reduce waste and make fashion a more sustainable industry.

Swedish brands H&M, Houdini, and Baby Bjorn, joined in, showing how they were changing fashion with garments made organic materials, as well as backpacks and baby carriers made of recycled PET bottles. The items displayed show how much companies can do to be more earth-friendly without losing functionality and style.

Anthill Fabric Gallery also exhibited its sustainability and zero waste efforts featuring the works of weavers from Argao, Cebu. By the end of 2016, the brand has literally turned into a growing hill of textile waste from production cut ends and fabric remnants of weaves and non-woven fabrics that have accumulated since Anthill’s operations in 2010.

Gracing the opening of Fashion Revolution in SM City Cebu were Swedish Ambassador Harald Fries, SM Prime Holdings vice president Marissa Fernan, Consul Jose Sala, Anya Lim of Anthill, and H&M Philippines head of communications Dan Mejia.

H&M also introduces its Garment Collection program. Customers may drop their bag of unwanted clothing in the recycling box in SM City Cebu or SM Seaside City Cebu branches. All textiles are welcome – any brand, any condition – even old socks, worn-out T-shirts and old sheets. The textiles are then sent to the nearest recycling plant, where these are sorted by hand. For every bag of textiles dropped off, one gets a voucher for the next purchase.

The Fashion Revolution Exhibit is displayed at the Northwing Atrium of SM City Cebu on September 21, and then transferred at the Cube Wing atrium in SM Seaside City Cebu until March 2020.
