Learning is the most important

CEBU, Philippines – Many students, including schoolchildren, are pressured to get good grades in class. They seem to think that getting good grades is the very purpose for their going to school. But the truth is, while getting an “A” or a “95” is good, the most important purpose for attending classes at school is to learn.

It is important for schoolchildren to understand that a top score in class test is nothing if it is a product of cheating. It is better to get a lower score that truly represents the student’s level of learning of the lesson. A low score can work to alarm both the teacher and the student that further discussion or more effort on the part of the student is needed.

The high expectations of parents and other family members may also be a problem. In which case it may be necessary to explain to them the difficulty the student is having on a particular subject matter. People at home will likely sympathize if the student shares his school problem with them.

Again, the student’s focus shall be on thoroughly understanding the lesson. He shall ask questions in order to make the lesson clear in his mind. A good understanding of the class lesson will, just the same, result in high score in the test – because the student is prepared to answer all the questions.
