"Retaso"
CEBU, Philippines - "Retaso" - Qube Gallery's featured show for the first half of August - is more than just the second solo exhibition of graffiti-cum-gallery artist Kidlat, as its overall presentation asserts that 'left' is not just the opposite of 'right' - that what is left can also be right by its own stance, pace and accord.
Opening on July 30, the exhibit's pieces are steered by elements which the exhibiting artist calls the "articulated clichés" of everyday life - setting the spotlight on everyday items like the 'kabo', the hammer and practically everything else in between.
Using a variety of creative techniques and mediums in rendering his art pieces to form, Kidlat's "Retaso" plays with the traditional concept of the montage - invariably framing common objects as items that are worthy to be hailed as venerable subjects that deserve their own montages.
In effect, the collection yields to a multi-faceted quality that is neither overt nor overbearing, polarizing yet subtle, simple yet all-in-all profound.
Ongoing until August 17, the public is invited to drop by Qube Gallery at the Crossroads to view "Retaso" - to see for themselves how that which is 'left' can be 'right', to see for themselves how "articulated clichés" can be provocative when shown under the right light.
