Nathan Cabello - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – The hedonists would surely argue that sex is at the very center of the life experience of humans, as of all animals. Which position is in line with Sigmund Freud's, who theorized that sex is the ultimate motivator of human behavior. But of recent popular concern is the possible ugly outcome of unabated pursuit of sexual pleasure. And it's not even about moral ruin.

Health officials everywhere are united in their effort to curb the escalating incidence of STDs, especially among the young. They have, in fact, drawn up several measures for reducing the risk, particularly directed to those with sexually active lifestyle. Of course, people are better to heed.

The following ideas published at the website www.uwgb.com are good to observe:

. Have sex with only one person, and make sure that person is only having sex with you;

. In case of the slightest uncertainty about a sexual partner, always use a condom - and use it correctly;

. Be open to talk with your partner about your sexual concerns.

The risk of an STD increases:

. The younger the person is when having sex for the first time;

. The more sex partners the person has over a lifetime.

. If the person uses alcohol or drugs, since poor decision-making is likely.

Those who are sexually active shall:

. Have STD checkups, even if there are no symptoms (especially important if the person is having sex with a new partner);

. Seek immediate medical attention when any symptoms emerge. (The person concerned must inform the doctor that he or she wants an STD checkup, otherwise the doctor may not know what tests are necessary);

. Women should avoid douching as it removes some of the natural protection in the vagina and increases the risk of catching disease;

. Notify all sex partners, once infected, so they can also be checked and treated if necessary;

. Avoid any sexual activity while being treated for an STD;

. Avoid sex with an untreated partner;

. Take all medication and follow all orders from the doctor.

Whether it's called VD, STD or STI, it all means the same thing: sexually transmitted infection passed from one person to another during oral, anal or vaginal sex.

STD can cause cancer, other life-threatening illnesses or even death. In women who are pregnant, STD can complicate delivery or cause the baby to be born with physical or mental defects. STD can make a person sterile - unable to ever have a baby.

Most STDs are treatable and curable - all are preventable. Early treatment is the next best thing to never getting the disease in the first place.
