CEBU, Philippines – In a time when the anchors of our rainbow connections are defined by the likes of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, the popularity of "matchmaking apps" can't really be described as strange - given how social media has changed the way we connect and stay in touch with our peers.

Harnessing the real-time communication features of internet-enabled smart devices, matchmaking app-and-service suites have locally been gaining popularity as avenues where love can bloom - although signing up for such service is not an assurance for finding a soul mate.

Still, if you are single and willing to mingle, you just might be interested in these matchmaking apps - like "OkCupid" and "Paktor."

OkCupid

Available in versions for web, Android and iOS

Launched in 2004, "OkCupid" is a dating and social networking website that comes with provisions for different modes of communication - including support email and instant messaging.

With mobile app ports for Android and iOS gadgets as its relatively new highlights, OkCupid members can find other OkCupid members the same interests - as well as gauge their compatibility factors based on a member's answers to a set of questions jotted down by the site's proponents.

Requiring its users to sign up for the service (at no cost, but there are premium membership options available), OkCupid members can interact with other members whose personal tastes and preferences match with theirs.

Though there are reports from members indicating that OkCupid interactions are at times slow and sluggish, this hasn't really negatively affected its standing as a popular matchmaking and dating app-and-service suite.

Paktor

Available in versions for Android and iOS

Developed by a Singabore-based firm, "Paktor" takes its name from a Hokkien term that translates to "going on a date."

But as a matchmaking app as its name directly suggests, it does tout itself as a venue where one can "chat with friends and meet new people" - meaning that it is not just an app dedicated for matchmaking or going on dates.

At its core, Paktor is quite straightforward and easy to use - allowing its members to search for other Paktor members based on age, current location and other search preferences.

Like OkCupid, Paktor's "matchmaking method" works for a.) finding someone interesting within the Paktor network, b.) sending that someone a message (thereby communicating with a fellow member) and c.) meeting up with a fellow member and going on a date.

From this point, it is up to the members' if they take their relationship further, or just stay as friends - or forget each other after meeting each other.

A WORD OF CAUTION: While the mentioned matchmaking apps are intended to help their members find individuals with interests compatible with theirs, the operational dynamic of these apps are similar to those of most social media networks. It is, thus, advised that the same degree of caution when interacting with members of the sites should be given when signing up for their services.
