Many new homeowners and renters ask me when is the best time to move into a new place. You would think they already did feng shui of their new place. Even if I determined the best time, it isn't feng shui at all. The proper timing for moving in is simply icing-on-the-cake in feng shui. It does not necessarily mean good lucky, if you simply observe the right timing and do nothing more of the proper feng shui procedures!

It seems, with most people, timing the moving-in on an auspicious day is merely for self-consolation. How? They probably want to save on a feng shui consultation, that's why.

Sure you may do it your way, but as the song goes: "For what is a man (woman too), what has he (she) got, if not himself (herself) then he (she) has not?" Your way or the highway?

Now here are the highways to lucky beliefs in home moving:

Any faith or traditional folklore espouses the belief that new homeowners change the luck of any place that they make into a home. And rural and urban legends contend that more often than not previous owners of a place leave behind their history of bad luck that can affect the new owners!

Thus, in home moving, it is a must to cleanse a place first before moving in - all for the wellbeing of the new occupants. The most popular cleansing method is the religious house blessing rituals, be it with Holy Water among Catholic Christians or other religious incense rituals.

But street-side cultures suggest the sprinkling of sea rock salt all over a new place before moving in, to erase all negativities of the past.

Highly observed too in moving in is the waning or waxing of the Moon. It is best to move in on a full-moon day and not new moon or any other phase.

Entering a new home should be done through the front main door, not through the garage or kitchen service door, to signify progression or forward movement of the new occupants.

Tossing rice grains or symbolic prosperity coins into the new house from the outside in at the main door and all bedroom and service rooms symbolize heralding prosperity and abundance for the home.

Italians sprinkle salt into the four corners of every room and sweep out dirt which they believe carry the previous owner's or the place's bad luck energies!

Indian vaastu or feng shui recommends that a bride walk into a new home not carried by the groom and enter with her right foot to literally start married life in a new home on the right footing! Other cultures, however, believe otherwise, thinking that the bride must be carried in order to be protected from evil spirits awaiting by the entrance door!

Tamil culture even advocates moving in on Thursdays and never on Friday or Saturday. Customarily moved into the new home first are salt, water, rice, sugar, spice, and everything nice to follow: altars, stoves, bed.

Whatever it takes to usher and herald moving into a new house or place, the feng shui adage to follow after following the advice from a feng shui expert is: "A house is built with walls and beams, a home is built with love and dreams."
