A peek at Biduk’s Kitchen

Justine Therese Juntilla - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - With restaurants popping out everywhere, the quest for eats may seem easier. But, no, it gets more challenging instead. It is not really easy to find a place that serves food that customers would come back for again and again. And it gets harder with the increased number of places to try.

A good place to eat remains quite a find. And so it is constantly sought for, with customers taking the effort to go wherever it is, no matter how out-of-the-way. A trail often develops to where good food is waiting.

A particular place in a busy part of the city is currently raising curiosity among foodies. And the curiosity often translates to loyal patronage. It is a small restaurant called Biduk's Kitchen. Anyone who'd been there would only have good words to say.

It's tucked in an interior alley along the city's busy Magallanes Street. A bit mysterious of a business address, which no doubt adds to the restaurant's appeal. But that's only as far as the teasing goes, there must surely be something more worth the buzz. The food, of course!

Biduk's is run by the Bentulan family, who all love good food. The place takes its name from the youngest child, BJ, whom the family calls Biduk as a term of endearment. The other main appeal of the place is that it fills the popular craving for great yet affordable meals. Since it opened in June, Biduk's has been a big favorite especially among students around the area.

The concept of the restaurant comes from ideas picked up from BJ's travels. The interiors exude a rustic feel, with all the wall design, posters and chalkboard menu. Being inside even makes a   good photo opportunity for posts in the social media. It is nothing fancy, though - it has a distinct character.

The menu is mostly chicken dishes. A variety of sauces goes with the top-seller Chicken Wings; the diner may take his pick. There's the so-called "suicidal" sauce, an extremely hot-and-spicy invention fit for the daredevil palates. For the "less adventurous," the Mild Hot, Teriyaki, Asian, Spicy Garlic and Sweet n' Sour versions are excellent options.

The Chicken Sticks are fried battered chicken fillets on barbeque sticks. Quite a twist, as sticks are commonly thought to belong only in barbecued dishes! The chicken fillets on sticks come in BBQ and Sour Cream flavors.

There's more at Biduk's Kitchen, aside from chicken, for both the curious first-timers and returning diners. And Biduk's secret is no secret at all. It's common knowledge that great food and affordable price are an unbeatable combination!
