AmCham’s “Honoring the American Troops”
CEBU, Philippines - For the past 14 years the American Chamber of Commerce in Cebu (AmCham) has celebrated the United States’ Independence Day from the Kingdom of Great Britain with a fantastic, fun party.
This year certainly was no exception when the well-respected civic club once again hosted the much anticipated party at the ballroom of the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel, and had for its theme “Honoring the American Troops.”
We may recall that one of the few constants of the Vietnam War eagerly awaited by American troops was the annual Bob Hope Christmas Show. From 1964 to 1972, Bob Hope included South Vietnam on his annual trips to entertain the soldiers.
AmCham relived this historic period with the reenactment of the show. The program started with the appearance of club past president and US Consular Agent John Domingo strutting on stage with his golf club a la veteran comedian Bob Hope. The well orchestrated show lasted for over an hour with many participants impersonating celebrities who many years ago graciously entertained the brave and young American soldiers .
Invited were the military heads of the AFP along with visiting US military personnel. There were over 500 people in attendance.
Among the invitees were Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama and Vice Mayor Edgar Labella. The guest of honor was the Consul General of the US Embassy, Donna Blair, who gave a welcoming message to the audience. Also at the event was former mayor Mario Ortiz who was a personal friend of General Douglas MacArthur.
The affair went well into the night and was highlighted by raffles of round trip destinations by several airlines who participated in the event. This was the 14th annual celebration hosted by AmCham and each year has seen an increase in the number of guests attending.
The active and dedicated AmCham officers led by president RL Dandy, vice presidents Roger Lim and Alice Woolbright, secretary Vince Colina, and treasurer Danny Deen. and the rest of the board, pulled out all the stops to make this event truly an enjoyable one.
