What Sleeping Positions Reveal About Relationships
CEBU, Philippines - A survey has found out that 94 percent of couples who touched each other while sleeping are happy in their relationship. On the other hand, 68 percent of couples who didn't touch each other during sleep rate their relationship as happy, too.
It has been a common belief that when a couple don't touch each other while sleeping, something is wrong in the relationship. But this may not always be the case. It might take more than simple sleeping positions to see the truth between partners.
Just the same, in one way or the other, sleeping styles are viewed as saying something about couple's personalities and the state of their relationship:
Back-to-Back Cherish
This sleeping style is one of the most practiced positions of couples because it gives them space and, at the same time, still have physical contact with each other. The position implies a feeling of assurance of each other's company. A relaxed companionship and a sense of equality between the partners are also depicted by this sleeping position. But this position only develops over the years, once the couple are already fully comfortable with their individual independence and shared interdependence.
The Classic Cliffhanger
This style is similar to "back-to-back cherish," minus the physical contact. This could mean a lot of things in the relationship, like feeling secure and at ease even without touching each other to feel connected. But this could also mean that a growing distance is possibly building between the couple, especially if this has not always been their normal sleeping position. An intimate conversation between the partners may be necessary to resolve whatever problem may be brewing in the relationship.
The Spoon Style
It is a two-way sleeping style wherein either the man or the woman wraps the partner with his or her arms. The couple lies on the same side, facing the same direction, one behind the other like a set of spoon. The one wrapping the other is usually the stronger and more giving in the relationship. Often, it is the man that wraps the woman with his arms; this shows that he is in control while the woman simply expresses her caring nature. This pose illustratesintimate love, passion, and closeness between the two.
Sweetheart Hug
This kind of sleeping style is common among newlyweds. Couples that have been together for a long time tend to no longer engage in this position. But, of long-time couples who still do this pose, they belong in the few that ever remains in their honeymoon phase. It is a position wherein the man wraps the woman with his arms, indicating male dominance since he takes the woman under his nurturing protection. Couples who practice this cuddly sweetheart pose are likely to be true romantic souls.
The Honeymoon Hug
This is one of the most intimate and romantic sleeping poses, because it indicates an intense need for physical contact with the partner. The couple face each other with their entwined bodies. This depicts deep love, as well as emotional and physical interdependence. It is commonly done by couples after making love or during the honeymoon stage.
The Shingles
Both the man and the woman in this pose sleep on their backs, facing in the same direction. This style shows that both partners have strong personalities. But, the woman laying her head on the man's shoulder means that she is soft and understanding. "The Shingles" is a style that represents equality, security and high level of trust between the partners.
In the end, although sleeping positions may reveal the state of the couple's relationship, it is still up to the couple what to make of the relationship, in the first place.
