Etiquette on Conversation
Gift giving is one of the nicest and warmest of customs, practiced throughout the world. The manner in which it is presented is as important as the gift. The personal touch must also be there.
Some people buy an expensive gift and simply sign at the bottom of the greeting card: "Maria." How much nicer to send a short, handwritten note of greeting that says, "I hope this will be the most wonderful birthday ever!"
The two major elements to successful gift giving are timing and creativity. The former implies thinking ahead, buying or making a present and having it ready on the proper day. Creativity is just as important. Being creative is being organized because it takes time to find or make the useful, the needed or the unexpected gift.
Giving does more than just improve the lives of others; it affects our own lives profoundly. The benefits range from the practical to the intangible, creating feelings of hope and a sense of connection with others. Giving is an essential but often overlooked human need.
Money is always a popular and appropriate gift. It must be carried out with proper timing and with discretion. There are those who claim it shows a lack of imagination and is a last resort gesture. However, money is appropriate in almost every case, if given in the right spirit.
If you are at a complete loss about what to give someone, a gift certificate is always a solution. Its only drawback is that the recipient knows exactly how much you paid for the gift.
The nicest presents to give and receive are the no-occasion, unexpected kind because they come from the heart and their monetary value is irrelevant. It could be a box of freshly baked cookies, a pot of growing herbs, or a book. These are impulse gestures, some may be romantic or sentimental, some teasing or funny. But all are acts of the heart and because they are unexpected, they are doubly appreciated.
