Fun things for summer
With the summer school break just a short time away, it is good to start planning fun activities to do. The sudden relief from routine schoolwork poses the possibility of you getting bored, if there’s nothing to fill the time. The following activities are nice to try:
Grow your own fruit trees
Did you know there’s a tree inside an orange seed, longing to get out? Plant orange, chicos, atis, kalamansi or any such seeds an inch deep in moss or good garden soil. Keep the planting medium moist until a sprout peeks out. Then water the new plant and clear it of weeds regularly. It’s fun to do and can later result in a good supply of homegrown fruits.
Make your own newspaper
Write a newspaper containing neighborhood news, book reviews, jokes, and even your own drawn cartoons. Have photocopies of it and pass out to friends and neighbors, or mail to faraway relatives to let them know how you are. Or, you might prefer to record a standup report (with yourself as reporter, of course!) and send to your favorite people everywhere.
Do memory games
Gather a few friends. Collect 20 small objects on a tray or on the table, and let everyone spend three minutes to memorize what’s there. (Use a stop watch or the one on your mobile phone to time.) Cover up the objects and see who can remember the most.
Watch birds
Spread crumbs around the backyard. Hide and wait for the birds to come. Count how many birds you can spot. Take photos of the birds using your mobile phone, if you like. You can later use these photos to check in the school library the names of the birds that came to your backyard.
These are just a few of the fun things you can do this summer. Think up more yourself. All it takes is a little creativity and drive to try something just for fun.
