Japanese firm donates cash to Yolanda survivors

CEBU, Philippines - Taiheiyo Cement Corporation (TCC) of Japan, its Cebu-based subsidiary, Taiheiyo Cement Philippines, Inc. (TCPI) and the latter’s employees collectively contributed for both the immediate relief and rebuilding of the survivors of Super Typhoon Yolanda in northern Cebu. TCC donated P2 million in cash through the Cebu Provincial Government. TCPI president and CEO Satoshi Asami personally handed the communique of TCC President Shuji Fukuda to Cebu Gov. Hilario “Jun-Jun” Davide III in a symbolic turnover of the donation.

Cebu Vice Gov. Agnes A. Magpale joined the governor in receiving the donation from Asami, his senior vice president for finance and materials management Yasuhiro Yamamoto, consultant Antonio “Jim-Jim” Chiu and corporate affairs division manager Nilo R. Yap.

“We hope this donation will be used to supply necessary materials that would help the people of northern Cebu to reconstruct their homes,”  Fukuda said in his letter to Gov. Davide.

The letter advised the governor that the donation would be transmitted from Japan direct to the province’s account with the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP).  

Fukuda also reported that TCPI brought relief supplies directly to the victims even just a few days after the devastating storm wreak havoc in their place last Nov. 8, 2013.

Asami revealed TCPI dispatched substantial relief goods as basic edible items like canned goods and noodles and clothing not only in northern Cebu but also in Tacloban City and Guiuan, Samar.

A significant part of the relief goods were personal contributions of TCPI employees, he disclosed.

TCPI employees and those of its suppliers also donated t-shirts and some clothing to the victims of the mega 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Bohol a few days after it struck last Oct. 15. (FREEMAN)
