CAI’s Art Malaysia Art Tourism Fair Pre Departure Exhibit

CEBU, Philippines - It’s difficult to ignore the weight and value of Cebu Artists Inc’s 7th exhibition this year, given the fact that it is actually more than a collection of masterfully made works, but also a proud precursor to another show that’s set to take place in Malaysia this September.

Celebrating its opening last August 23 in the 2nd Level of the Banilad Town Center, the ArtMalaysia Art Tourism Fair Pre Departure Exhibit gathers more than 60 works made by the members of Cebu Artists Incorporated (CAI), each bearing the charismas and appeals which have paved the way for superior works into being.

Showcasing pieces made using different mediums and implements, the show’s overall execution is engaging, evoking a sense of atmosphere and attitude that covers a large piece of the artistic pie.

From endearing representational compositions to contemporary-themed pieces, the eclectic nature of the show works to its and its viewers’ advantage, heralding and presenting how much Cebu’s artists have grown.

Rico Maranga’s “Vendor” and “Pisik”, two of the exhibit’s worthy-of-mention pieces, does not only define the artist’s masterful skill, but also points to his views in the creation of narrative paintings, as well as alludes to his understanding of perspective and depth of field.

Tony Alcoseba’s “Old Boljoon Church” and Darby Alcoseba’s “Yacht” easily points to the artists’ distinct attention to detail, a feat which the two talents intensely achieve in using watercolor as a medium – which is largely viewed to be the most difficult-to-manage medium in the arena of the arts.

Antonio Vidal’s “Mother and Child” takes a refreshed stance in one of the most covered subjects in the area of iconography, depicting the Virgin Mother and the Child Jesus in Filipino garb, giving the piece a relevant and relatable value.

Guido Bubanga puts the spotlight on the principles of parallel rendering and linear cross hatching in the pen and ink piece “Calaca Church”, just as Jess Dinglasa’s understanding of the use of light and manipulation of tonal hue is evident in “Day Break”.

John Dinglasa manages to accomplish a thought-provoking piece in “Finder’s Keeper” using graphite as a medium, creating a piece that doesn’t just capture a moment in time but also imparts an understated story.

In collecting different works that are steeped in different artistic themes, disciplines and styles, the ArtMalaysia Art Tourism Fair Pre Departure Exhibit manages to steer clear from being a mish-mash of works, unified in its scope in presenting the true bravado of Cebu’s artistic talents.
