Javy Villacin: Rediscovering the Flight of Angels
CEBU, Philippines - As an exhibit, Jose “Javy†Villacin’s Rediscovering the Flight of Angels is more than a collection of fine examples of abstract expressionism, with its presentation primed towards archiving Villacin’s growth and direction as an artist – tracing and tracking his creative tenacity.
Celebrating its opening last July 6 in the Bluewater Gallery of the Bluewater Maribago Beach Resort, the show takes an ambivalent stance in delving into matters of anachronism and spirituality, with Villacin’s contemporary sights leading its viewers to a higher state of mind.
Highlighting the impressions and expressions taken from Villacin’s forays into the realm of thought, each of Rediscovering the Flight of Angels’ featured pieces works through the use of organic, composite, vegetal and anthropomorphic elements, blended into unique visual tableaus with the predominant use of neutral acrylic hues.
With Villacin’s standards of visual aesthetics perceptible in each piece, a sense of tonal and spatial texture can be felt in Rediscovering the Flight of Angels’ showcased pieces, a quality which essentially points to the aesthetic value Villacin has built a name and reputation on as one of the region’s top artistic talents.
Born in 1957, Villacin graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Major in Painting at the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1980.
A fellowship grantee of the British Council, Byam Shaw School of Art in London in 1988, he is currently part of the fine arts program of the University of the Philippines Cebu, doing his share in leading the next generation of artists in soaring to higher highs.
In celebrating the opening ceremonies of Rediscovering the Flight of Angels, Villacin does more than reinforce Cebu’s growing interest in abstraction, but also imparts an important lesson to one and all – words are not the only coins in the realm of thought, with visual ideals having their own value as its currency.
