A new space for Cebu’s artists

CEBU, Philippines - Since its founding in October last year, Qube Gallery has done impressively well in representing the Visayas region’s progressive views towards art in all its forms, not once falling into the pedantic pitfalls other art galleries are described to have succumbed to.

Recently celebrating two momentous occasions in its young-but-active history last January 31, the less-than-a-year old Qube proudly opened the doors to its new art space in Qube Gallery Persimmon Plus that day, as well as celebrated the opening of the new venue’s first exhibit, Bohol-Buhol 2.

Collecting close to 60 works crafted by 17 Bohol-born talents, Bohol-Buhol 2 intently defines what the new Qube Gallery Persimmon Plus aims to showcase in the days ahead, with the show featuring socially engaging artworks that easily defy the predictable.

Valuable not just for its worth as a collection of eclectic paintings and sculpted pieces, Bohol-Buhol 2’s poetic sensibilities and storytelling prowess is impossible to miss, with works delving into thematic expositions, pieces which are steeped with social commentaries, and unique compositions that are driven by contemporary aesthetic mindsets and views.

Not too earnest in melodrama nor too stifled with restraint, Bohol-Buhol 2 stands by Qube Gallery’s core focus, that is – not to be limited and inhibited in the art it features, but rather committed and dedicated in extending the bounds that define art’s limits and inhibitions.

Driven by the premise of helping local talents gain justly deserved distinctions, Qube Gallery, with the new Qube Gallery Persimmon Plus and its flagship show Bohol-Buhol 2, wades on the currents of Cebu’s artistic progress, doing its part in washing away the wasteland of unawareness which have long caused a dent in art’s growth in Cebu and the rest of the Visayas and Mindanao.
