UVNS - Putting the Cool back in School

- Yasunari Ramon Suarez Taguchi - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - Though learning to be creative has long been argued to be an "academic impossibility", the formal device of learning from maestros - from those who've built lucrative careers by being creative - remains to be something which artists and creative aspirants are in constant search for.

Come the start of ITS classes this November, the University of the Visayas' School of New Media and Design (UVNS) heralds an answer to those on the lookout for such learning avenues, with UVNS proudly standing as the first school in Cebu to offer courses devoted and steeped in the multi-faceted disciplines of the creative design industry.

Highlighting the input of professional instructor-mentors whose passions for the arts have flourished amidst real life's challenges and bargains, UVNS is intent in molding its students into becoming creative professionals who come up with creative working solutions - not technical cut-and-paste workarounds.

Headed by Genesis Raña, the frontman of Cebu's Empire Creative Group, the school will be offering three-month courses on Digital Illustration, Visual Design and Photography this coming semester, with classes to take place in the UVNS facilities, located in the Gullas Medical Center in Banilad, Cebu City.

To offer courses focusing on the disciplines of Visual Effects/Motion Graphics, Vido/Film Production, 2D/3D Animation and Production Design by the next semester, UVNS offers 480 hours of in-depth and extensive creative design training, with Raña and mentors Jethro Estimo, Ken Onozawa, Jan Gonzales, Kaloy Uypuanco, Alex Uypuanco and Philip Mvana teaching and inspiring its students.

Implementing the base ideals of relevance and significance into its unique curriculum, UVNS also aims to bridge the actual realities of the creative industry with the theory-based comforts of the classroom.

Partnering with existing creative outfits like the Empire Creative Group and Amazing Cebu, UVNS' intends to provide its students with actual opportunities where what they've learned will be tested by taking on actual creative design duties - making the entire creative learning process more real and more valuable in the growth and development of budding artists and creatives.

For more information about UVNS, you may visit the Student Affairs and Services Center, UV Banilad. You may also call (032) 345-0031 or email UVNS at [email protected] (FREEMAN)
