When summer is over

CEBU, Philippines - When summer is over, it never really is.

For most of us, once the month of June steps in, the season of sun and frolic comes to a conclusion. But that's the beauty of living in the tropics, for me, it is always summer! True, the occasional rainshowers, thunderstorms and typhoons may get in the way of the sun during these months but by now, as tropical dwellers we should have gotten used to it or at least found a way to work around it. Who are we to contest Mother Nature? In my case, it's all about finding an opportunity to still splash and jaunt in every way possible.

Thus, the last couple of months were a continuous discovery of newer destinations and returns to very familiar ones. Along the way, I will share tips on how to maximize the sunny days amidst this unpredictably wet season.

Stay close. Crossing waters can be a little tricky these days. So, I kept it within land-transport reach. My adventurous curiosity found me (along with friends from the US) in the northern city of Bogo where one of the original resorts on this side of the province sets home. The Nailon Beach Resort always struck a curious bone when I began to visit this progressive town way back in the early 90s.

Truly an institution, this cozy resort combines its rustic feel with modern amenities. Believe me, the rooms are one of its major attractions. It's both spacious and homey. The beach and pool are always a given for this old establishment and the food is undisputedly superb. Yet at that time of my visit, they needed a little polish on their restaurant service. Nevertheless, for that short getaway, this is a must-visit.

Keep in the forecast. Okay, okay, blame the heavy rains that my Siquijor trip (with all logistics and reservations in place) was cancelled last month. Well, at least it was deliberate since I was keeping track of the weather. Looking for an alternative destination then became an ease when I saw the Coco Palms Resort in Danao City on the way home from my Bogo overnight.

Yes, the curious cat in me purred-in once again. So here we are in this newly mounted two-story Mediterranean-inspired building, checked in to a fully-furnished studio-apartment-inspired room. Mind you this private nook spells sophistication in all corners: state of the art amenities, elegant decors and expensive furniture. The resort's best features are undoubtedly the larger-than-life aqua facilities,which includes a newly-built eternity pool.

Unfortunately, all that great features are stripped right in front of you due to poor service, unappetizing food and low standards of maintenance. No, I'm not going back ever.

Follow your instinct. If there is one thing I am always spot on when it comes to juggling from what is available and practical, trusting your gut-feel always ends up as the best decision! Going back to my within-land-transport-reach, I opted for the familiar and the tried-and-tested. Thus, El Salvador Resort and Spa was the right choice.

Though the rooms are not as spacious,they are just equally cozy. Here you are assured of prompt service and excellent food. This place I gladly recommend.

Stay home? Yes, when all seems too bleak and gloomy, my best option is to just stay home--but not literally. As one of the lucky ones living in the coastal town of Liloan, a beach bum like me always has the option to visit the nearby shore.

Here, 'feeling-at-home' is an understatement. As I have been part of the neighborhood daily grind, even just for an hour on a weekday (this particular beach is where I do my usual swim exercise). Though come weekends and holidays, local tourists may blanket the beach but on either occasions, this space still never loses its familiar touch. Sans the luxury and fancy amenities of a high-profile resort, make-shift dressing and restrooms created by enterprising citizens are more than enough for that needed privacy. Nipa cottages installed with bamboo benches and tables are adequate for picnic space. And the beach may not be blessed with reflective white sands but the waters are clear.

Right now, I am considering exploring down south and see what I might discover. Or maybe brave the waters this time and make a short cross to Olango and revisit a resort villa in Talima. Come to think of it, the holidays are just around the corner. This should be the best time to map out plans for the coming December vacation. Suggestions anyone? I would love to give you my own reviews for any place you have in mind.
