CEBU, Philippines - Did you know that there is a kind of ginger that's considered "jewel of all spices?"
The turmeric (duwaw) is in fact referred to as "skin candy." This is because it can immediately help heal a wound. One doesn't have to fear of swelling because turmeric serves as a cleansing agent.
It is called a rhizome because it comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant. It is a relative of the ginger family.
Ironically, it is commonly referred to as yellow ginger or luyang dilaw but a close look would show that it has deep, orange-red color. It has tough brown skin. It is the fleshy root that is dried and ground into powder.
In cooking, turmeric is used in making curry spice mixture. But it is most valued for its ability to heal cuts, ease headaches, muscle pains and many more. It is important in first aid.
The curcuma rhizome (curcumin) is being studied in the fight against cancer and other ailments like joint pains adults would call arthritis.
