Little Chefs

CEBU, Philippines - Another fun activity you can do this summer is BAKING.

Most of you might have helped mom or ate in baking some sweet treats and goodies for the family. Perhaps you have topped colorful baking sprinkles and other edible cake decorations on delicious cupcakes, or have helped out in piping the icing. I’m sure you had fun!

If you wish to become an excellent baker, helping out in the kitchen is a good start. You have to be exposed and gain experience in order for you to become the best.

On Mother’s Day, a number of kids, all giddy to learn about baking, headed to Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa for a short baking workshop under the supervision of Executive Chef Joris Rycken dubbed Little Chefs on Parade at the Rosal Ballroom. The 4 to 8 year olds learned cookie decorating while those who are 9 to 12 had cakes to decorate. Each kid was provided with assorted toppings, colored sugar paste and colored icing in a piping bag to better dress their cakes and big cookies.

Garbed in chef’s jackets, aprons, necker and toques, the kids gleefully started decorating after the parade around the resort. Some creatively spread the icing on top of the gingerman-shaped cookie and dusted bright colored sprinkles while others played on with flower-shaped mallows to beautify their chocolate cakes. And after an hour, these thoughtful kids gave their sweet treats to their moms.

Little Chefs on Parade is an annual activity for kids that happens every Mother’s Day which include a cooking workshop with the resort’s top chefs.  This is another way to expose kids to culinary arts.

Till next year! (FREEMAN)
