Bright Academy summer workshop open to outsiders

CEBU, Philippines - Summer Workshop 2012 offered by Bright Academy in Banilad, Cebu City is designed even for non-Bright students and adults.

Ten programs designed to nurture the core values of discipline, time management, focus, camaraderie, and leadership will start classes on May 2, except the football clinic which will start on May 7.

Opening the workshop to more students, their parents and/or caregivers/guardians, as well as to more adults helps promote the school's programs to the public --- arts and painting, modern dancing, swimming, junior master chef, reading and penmanship, taekwondo, music, basketball, football, and play group.

Arts and painting will be facilitated by Fine Arts students of the University of the Philippines and Play House teachers; modern dancing by the San Diego Dance Company, junior master chef by Chef Lor Torres of the Academy for International Culinary Arts; taekwondo by Kenneth Thadeus Toledo (a three-time Big East U.S. Taekwondo champion; national champion); basketball with Coach Al Solis; football with Coach Dennis Peñalosa (Philippine National Coach for the Youth; Philippine Football Federation); swimming with Niña Dumasis (Southeast Asian Games medalist); reading and penmanship, music and play group will be handled by Bright Academy and Play House and My Playroom teachers.

For swimming, specifically, Coach Dumasis said that they observe a 3:1 teacher-student ratio. "With adaptation in the water as first lesson, we have to be sure the "class size" is manageable in order to keep it safe for our students," Dumasis said.

Course outline is divided into basic swimming and advanced swimming. With the basics comes freestyle swimming - adaptation, breath holding (assisted and unassisted), floating skills, gliding, kicking, bobbing, prone gliding with flutter, as well as diving.

For advanced swimming, Dumasis will teach lessons on backstroke (back floating, inverted flutter kicking, armstroke drill, backstroke with arms and legs action); breaststroke (frog kicking drill, armstroke drill, breathing drill, etc.); butterfly stroke (dolphin kicking drill, etc.)

Aside from swimming which highlights basic survival skills, football is also one of the "saleable" summer courses at Bright Academy. This is because the school has strongly promoted the sports through its U10, U12, and U17 football teams.

"Aside from discipline and all the other core values, football promotes coordination, a skill very essential among developing children," Coach Peñalosa pointed out.
