Avoiding Street Crimes

- Darling Chyrmyth Wagas -

CEBU, Philippines - While riding on his motorbike, a balikbayan OFW attempted to celebrate his return to his hometown. He bade goodbye to his parents and started the motor’s engine.

Then, with the excitement still in his mind, he congratulated himself on his ability to still ride on that motorbike. When he crossed the street, it turned out to be his last day on earth. He was murdered.

Crimes are everywhere. Robbery, snatching, pickpocketing, murder and rape are common crimes on the streets. They have been part of the daily papers and late-night television reports. Street crimes cast fear in loosely guarded roads and throw havoc even in a tightly patrolled metropolis.

We would even imagine ourselves falling prey to street predators, at times. They would be seen darting through the streets, and would attack unexpectedly unsuspecting victims.

The Crime Prevention Coordinating Services of the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) has disseminated crime prevention tips to reduce these menacing crimes on the streets.

1. Avoid walking alone. Walk with the crowd.

2. Stay out of alleys, vacant lots and abandoned buildings.

3. Walk near the curb. Don’t pass close to shrubbery, dark doorways and dilapidated places. Avoid shortcuts.

4. Carry a whistle for emergencies.

5. Cross to the other side of the road if someone is following you. Take refuge in well-lighted areas where people gather in groups. Get ready to use your whistle anytime

6. Do not hitchhike or accept rides from strangers. If a vehicle approaches and forces you to ride, turn and run in the opposite direction. Time for that scream, loud and long.

7. Keep your wallet or money in an inside pocket of your handbag. Unless absolutely necessary, never wear expensive jewelry or carry large amount of money.

8. Secure your handbag under your arm.

9. Walk confidently on the street. Keep your head up. Size up your surroundings. Avoid using headphones while walking, because this may give the impression that you are unaware of what’s going on.

10. Be careful when people stop for directions or information. Be courteous but remain at a safe distance from the vehicle.

11. Keep house key ready to open house gate without delay.

Mental alertness, vigilance and safety are the precautionary measures to guarantee safety from crime. However, if a street crime is inevitable, report the incident immediately to the police station near you.
