CEBU, Philippines - Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture, having been held since 1810. It is a two-week beer festival celebrated annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany and is the world’s largest fair with more than five million people participating each year.
Other countries around the globe also hold Oktoberfest celebrations, modeled after the Munich event. In Cebu, the place to be was Movenpick Resort and Spa located at the tip of Mactan Island.
The fun-filled event opened with the traditional tapping of the keg of beer by guests of honor Governor Gwen Garcia and Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza. They were assisted by Director for Business Development Helmut, Gaisberger and General Manager Klaus Graesslin.
The guests were treated to an all-night al fresco merriment in the beautifully maintained garden fronting the beach.
Drink-all-you-can beer with platters of sausages grilled to sizzling perfection, or steamed, simmered in sauce were presented at several food stations. Likewise, various German potato salads and sauerkraut were available in traditional styles.
Executive Chef Terry Styles whipped up fantastic dishes that showcased authentic German cuisine such as old Munich Beef pot roast cooked with cabbage, pork schnitzel, glazed ham with honey dew melon and for dessert the ever popular apple strudel and Frankfurt ring cake.
There were lots of parlor games but easily the most popular one was the beer-drinking contest for men. The dashing gentleman Rico Amman easily won hands down.
Enjoying the evening were fun couples Bobit and Jessica Avila, Cheling and Susan Sala, Hurst and Queenie Amman, Franz and Elizabeth Seidenschwarz. Opting to go solo but having just as much fun were Agnes Huettel, Mayen Tan, Baby Schaap and Ronald Canopio.
With the venue filled to capacity, a festive German ambiance pervaded through the entire evening.
The successful and happy celebration was a perfect way for the hotel to once again remind one and all, they are here to stay, to serve and to ensure each guest will go home equipped with wonderful memories to last a lifetime.
