CEBU, Philippines - In celebration of the Buwan Ng Wika, here are traditional Filipino games that you kids will surely enjoy! Have fun!

Karerang Bao

(Coconut shell stilts race)

Karerang Bao is a racing game. It requires two or more players (children should be seven years old or above to make sure they can balance themselves atop coconut shell stilts called sangko).

The stilts are made by inserting a string of abaca rope four feet long through the eyes of the coconut shells. The end of the rope is rolled around the hand to adjust the length according to the height of the player. A set of start and finish lines are drawn. The players run at full speed when the signal is given and the player who reaches the finish line first is declared the winner.

If there are many players, divide them into two teams having the same number of players then turn it into a relay race. Members of the team will be lined up behind the starting line and a marker will be identified. When the signal is given, each player must run to the marker, go around it and then go back to the starting line to transfer the stilts to the next player. The first team to finish wins the game!

Sipa

(Filipino for kick)

Sipa is the national game of the Philippines.

It uses a shuttlecock (also called sipa) made of a flat lead washer (tingga) with bright strips of cellophane (plastic straw) or colorful threads or yarn attached to it. The sipa is tossed up in the air and the player taking his or her turn must not allow the sipa to touch the ground by hitting it several times with his/her foot or thigh.

Each player must count the number of times he/she is able to kick the sipa and keep it in the air. The player must with the most number of kicks wins the game. (Source: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Family Calendar)

Candyland fashion show set Aug. 28

Experience something sweet-like-candy shows with lots of exciting freebies at Candyland on August 28, 4 p.m. at the Ayala Activity Center.

A fashion show dubbed “Fun Fashion for Kids” will highlight sweet and colorful fashion pieces for children. Dresses will be taken off the rack of tenants UCB, Guess Kids, Oshkosh B’gosh, Kaboosh, and Big&Small Co., while Accessorize, Broadway Gems, and Cribs by The Maze will provide the accessories.

Outfits again from UCB, Oshkosh B’Gosh, Guess Kids, as well as Spin and Orange Juice will be strutted in the “Little Boys Fashion” with accessories from Sanuk, Crocs and Havaianas.

There will also be a magic show. During the event, giveaways like cotton candies and lollipops, among a bagful of goodies, will be handed out to the children.

The event is set to be carried out in an atmosphere filled with candy-themed standees (lollipops, gumdrops, jellies and many more), candy ark, and swirl candy walkway. This is because candy is always associated with children. Children love candy because it is “sweet, colorful and fun.” To a child, candy is everything.

To get an exclusive pass to the Candyland Experience, just present receipts worth P500 minimum. Aside from the stores mentioned earlier, the show is also being supported by Play2Learn, Bossini, Eyes Candy, Skechers, and Toys@Work.
