Poor Driving

ROVING IMP - Kristalle Marie Garcia-Kekert -

No matter whether you’ve driven for years or just acquired a driver’s license, if you drive irresponsibly, then you shouldn’t be permitted to drive at all under any circumstances!

I had a recent encounter with one very irresponsible driver, whom I could easily refer to as one driving idiot, who shouldn’t be entitled to be behind the wheel at all! Can I ask you – did you manage to take any formal lessons in driving? Or even undergo any written tests or lectures? Do you even have a driver’s license at all? It wouldn’t come to me as a surprise if you answered NO to all of the above. If you can’t get it right, then you shouldn’t be behind the wheel and put yours and others’ lives at risk!

Once on the road, it is highly important to be free of any distractions such as talking on your mobile phone, eating, drinking, smoking, talking excessively with people in the vehicle or even listening to extremely loud music! No driver should be involved with other unnecessary things except focusing on the road and be 100 percent awake throughout the journey. I also have to emphasize that I certainly do not agree to overcrowd a vehicle by having more passengers than the seats available. This is when seatbelts are neglected.

Driving is a very serious matter. Acquiring a license does not mean that one is free to jump into a vehicle and break all rules. With too many risks involved, many of us should be better educated in driving to avoid serious road mishaps. I was shocked at the simplest things such as not being able to park properly and changing of lanes without any signaling! No, this isn’t a laughing matter. It saddens me that there are too many bad and disrespectful drivers out there, who won’t admit to being one. Instead, they would try to prove the other driver wrong by acting macho and treat the road as if it were a playground by using their vehicle and actions to intimidate the other driver. I see this everyday, as a driver and a passenger, and I can only shake my head thinking of what serious accidents can happen in the near future. Why can’t we just come clean, admit to our driving errors, take in our mistakes and sincerely apologise as opposed to putting the blame on others?

Has anyone ever heard of road courtesy? Why do many individuals always want to go first only to then cause a traffic jam? If we all give way once in a while, traffic would run a lot smoother, which makes for a more relaxed driving experience. What is the point of having road signs and traffic lights if no one acknowledges them or ignores them all together? They are not just there for reference but to avoid accidents and to help control traffic.

Having a big or imported car with shiny wheels and fancy lights doesn’t give you extra priority or special treatment on the road; same rules apply to everyone! Also, public utility vehicles shouldn’t think that the road is a racetrack. Instead, these drivers should take extra precaution and think of the responsibility of carrying passengers. Bad drivers should be educated better, or worse, banned from the road! In comparison, a good driver is never in a rush to get from point A to point B; he is courteous to other drivers and is always aware of the dangers that could happen in driving.
