FEATURE STORY - Stacy Danika Alcantara -

Mother’s Day is among the many special days in the calendar that I truly look forward to because it’s that one day dedicated to everyone’s favourite female hero—Mother. I’ve rarely come across anyone who wouldn’t say that they draw strength and inspiration from their mothers.

It’s amazing how one woman can have the power to raise children who can potentially change the world. And more often than not, aside from a kiss on the cheek or a tight hug from their kids, mothers don’t often get the kind of credit they deserve for a job well done.

Many of us, myself included, only get around to truly appreciating our mothers the moment we leave the nest. Personally, every trip back home is something that I truly look forward to because no hotel accommodation can beat the kind of love and care I get from that one woman in my life.

Here’s a quick rundown of the stuff that’s enough to make me say that hands down, I have the best mother in the world.

1. My mother’s competitiveness and drive for excellence is amazing because she makes me want to be the best without making me feel as if I’m bearing the brunt of a generation’s worth of expectations—without making me feel the pressure.

2.         My mother’s supportiveness in everything that I wanted to do is a subject of envy among many of my friends who find it a struggle to live their passion simply because their parents do not understand why it’s so important to them. While other mothers would be appalled if their children didn’t follow the more lucrative and practical paths of Nursing and Business when choosing their college courses, my mother was behind me all the way when I decided to take up Mass Communication knowing how much it meant to me to follow my heart.

3.         My mother has always been picky when it came to men and I guess that’s also one of the reasons why up until now, I’m proudly an NBSB. My mother has always told me not to hurry that part of my life and to never settle for anyone less than the best. I’m glad I listened because it’s true when she said that it’s better to be alone than be with bad company. I’ve seen friends who simply dove into a relationship and their lives are just busted.

4.         It’s the little things that make a big difference. My mother has always made me feel like I’m such a big event in her life not by throwing me a birthday bash or a fireworks extravaganza but by the tiniest stuff like staying up until the wee hours of the morning just to put together a killer outfit that I need for an interview or by combing my hair even when I didn’t ask her to do it or by serving me toast when I had to work well into the night just to make sure I’m not hungry. These are the little things that make me believe that God loves me too much to give me the mother I have.

5.         My mother has been my fashion icon more than Madame Chanel or Donna Karan or Vera Wang because her style has always been chic, practical, and put together. My mother taught me to embrace fashion because it isn’t just about self expression, it’s a way of life and it creates an impact and an impression to whoever you meet.

6.         My mother proved to me that you can be a full time career woman and a full time mother at the same time and this has been nothing short of inspiring and empowering for me. I’ve always considered my mother to be among the strongest women I’ve known. It’s her example that has made me continually smash the glass ceiling most especially in the corporate world and prove to everyone that alpha female can run the boardroom and the household impeccably.

I could go on and on because the truth is that the reasons to thank my mother are just endless. Yes, we may not see things eye to eye all the time and we may flare up at each other times owing to my being just bull-headed 90% of the time but that doesn’t mean I love my mother any less.

To my mom, thank you for always making me feel like a big event even when I don’t always deserve it.
