Fashion flash!

- Bobit S. Avila -

CEBU, Philippines - Samsung commissioned 10 designers for the Samsung Holiday Wear 2010, which unfolded right smack at Cebu’s ultimate destination, The Northwing of SM City Cebu. The designs took a hodgepodge of references— from modern Boticelli’s Venus to a Tron princess, Roman gladiators to 50s Roman Holiday, Pocahontas to Lady Gaga to the Nutcracker Suite. Though all worked with a light, fresh touch in sync with Samsung’s position as the de rigueur phone for the fashion demimonde, consciously or not, the mood read enchanting with the jewel colors, headpieces and accessories (especially on Peewee Senening, Mique Yapching and Alejandro Godinez.) The Christmas legacy of optimistic “optic play” could be traced in the colorific hues and holiday music and there was something ballet-ish about the models’ moves courtesy of director Junjet Primor “There’s modern romance in this collection that was hard to miss,” quipped the celebrated director.

The designers featured were hardly interested in frilly femininity, though the Boticelli painting on a dress and matching orange lipstick on model Fern Medequillo had a bite. And while she succeeded in catching everyone’s attention as she opened the show, she did so without abandoning the highlight of the show. For in full display were 10 of Samsung’s new model phones, conveniently nested on the walking mannequins’ palms.

On a lighter note, Protacio’s burgundy jacket and linen shorts on hunky Stephan Urtizberea almost stole the show. But the Samsung phones were still the stars of the show. How to choose between what to wear for the holiday soirees, or touch screen Samsung phone? Take one of each. The economy will thank you. (FREEMAN)
