Beetle Mania
CEBU, Philippines - Back in the 30s and 40s, Volkswagen became a household name because of its massive patronage. It was the rave…it was then the “groove.” Volks was popularly identified as a practical/best car option due to its cost-efficiency, versatility and durability.
We’ve reached this modern age when cars have undergone major revamps, automakers have added more interior accessories, designers included more psychedelic color options, engineers developed more sophisticated performance parts for a more driving pleasure. But amidst the commercial car sell-out, classic Volkswagens still sprint in the highways – a proof that a Volks stays true to its trademark: brawny.
The Volkswagen Club sa Sugbo, Inc. (VWCS) is group of VW enthusiasts, all owners of one or more VWs, that promotes the preservation and restoration of these precious metals. A classic VW, according to VWCS prexy Jonathan Polo, is a nostalgic piece, a memento that reminds us of the good ‘ol days so it’s worthwhile to restore and overhaul such vehicle for daily use.
VWCS has been around for 12 years already and has held a series of activities to not only build camaraderie among its members but also link themselves to the environment and the needy via charity works, environmental projects, among others. Bug runs, of course, add to the thrill aside from participating in car shows and contests.
The members have always been consistent with their response to the question as to why they prefer a Volks. For one, it’s easy to maintain since the car parts are affordable, second, because of its fuel economy factor, and third, owners can readily customize their toys. Past president Byron Piramide even jokingly said that a VW Beetle is a highly respected automobile because people salute whenever a beetle passes by.
In celebration of Father’s Day, SM City Cebu takes you down memory lane through a showcase of classic, newly restored and refurbished Volkswagen cars owned by active members of the VWCS dubbed as Beetle Mania. Visit the Northwing Atrium and let your eyes ogle on the sleek rare car display. Get back to the groove! The Beetle Mania runs till tomorrow.
