Cebu Festival at the South Road Properties

- Jen F. Vega -

CEBU, Philippines - This week, the South Road Properties (SRP) has weeklong activities that foster family bonding, and promote local economy and tourism, collectively called the Cebu Festival 2010.

Cebu Fest is the brainchild of young businessman Brian Lim of Pyroworks, who sits as over-all chairman of the event. Cebu Fest is a blend of sporting and social events spearheaded by the locals themselves.

The nightly bazaars showcase an exciting mix of items that range from RTWs to home knick knacks. There is also an agro-fair where locally-produced products are on display. Entertainment from the covered stage will echo as you drift from one stall to the other. Also, a carnival with exhilarating rides will delight young visitors and kids-at-heart. Food stalls are all over, as well. These social activities kick off at 4PM till midnight.

On May 7 and 8, the sports buffs will be feted to live action and demos as Cebu Fest will play host to 12 sporting events, namely: motocross, baseball, softball, flag football, touch rugby, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, boxing, mix martial arts, marathon run, drag race and chess organized by our local athletes. Interestingly, free clinics will be offered by the pros so parents can enroll their kids. For those who fancy sleek and rare cars, the car show is a must-see as 100 automobiles will be displayed.

The event highlight, which will happen on May 8 at 7PM, is Cebu’s Guinness World Record attempt on the most number of rockets fired at one time through Lim’s Pyroworks, a homegrown fireworks manufacturer. Lim said a total of 128,000 rockets will be launched for this Guinness record attempt, which will last for 20 minutes. The organizers are eyeing to beat that of Plymouth, UK organized by Dr. Roy Lowry which launched only 56,405 rockets – the current record holder. Last year, Bournemouth, UK released 110,000 fireworks but is yet to be confirmed by Guinness. Lim proudly announced that this is another Cebuano-pride aside from the fact that these fireworks are locally-made. Expect an emotional thrill ride this Saturday as water shells, water ballets and sunflowers will enchant your eyes.

Thirteen shuttles are currently deployed to transport visitors from specific areas to SRP and vise versa. Designated pick-up points: from IT Park via Ayala, Fuente via Colon, SM, Pardo Church via Mambaling, Guadalupe Church via Tisa, E-Mall or Cebu City Hall.
