MUGNA - LAMBIGIT: A Creative Linkage

-

CEBU, Philippines - The notion that art, as a universal language, shall go beyond race is mostly a reflection of one's idealism rather than the real scenario in the art world. In the Philippines, such an idea is more of a slogan than an inspiration that encourages the artist's community to sow the seed of unity. Our sense of pride most often than not has contributed much in burning the bridge of an artistic collaboration rather than bridging the understanding on the universality Art. Adding fire for this artistic dilemma is the silent competition of seeking wider patronage and undermining the seed of professionalism, thereby imploying political gimmicks just to attain one's national recognition. Art per se is much valued as a commodity, unmindful of the validity of one's artistic expression.

Though in the past, there were activities that sowed the seed of artistic unity, much are still needed. The same action must be in place to encourage cooperation in the field of visual art. Behind this notion, the Cathedral Museum of Cebu, in cooperation with the Exhibition Center of Contemporary Arts, which is presently based in Pasig City, will come up with an art exhibit that brings with it a spirit of unity and cooperation between Manila and Cebu artists. Mugna-Lambigit is a continuing attempt to bridge the gap between Cebu and Manila artists. It aspires to draw it a spirit of unity that can contribute to a true Filipino artistic identity. It hopes to get public support through government agencies in the development and promotion of the rich cultural heritage of the Filipino people. It is also envisioned to afford the Cebuano community the works of artists from Manila. Above all, it hopes to generate friendship and harmony among Filipino painters. To add more meaning and interest to the exhibit, Manuel Duldulao will give a talk entitled How To Collect Art before the opening of the exhibit. Duldulao is recognized for his outstanding works in writing art books such as The Collector's Guide, A Century of Realism and Philippine Art Now.

The artists who will be participating in this show are: Fidel Sarmiento and Adler Llagas from Manila; Jose "Kimsoy" Yap Jr., Fred Galan and Celso Duazo Pepito from Cebu. The exhibit will be at the Cathedral Museum of Cebu from May 21 to 31.

Fidel Sarmiento

An artist of great stature, Fidel, more than a creative genius, is a man of leadership as proven in his re-election as the president of the Art Association of the Philippines, just recently.

Fidel's art is a perfect reflection of his fascination and interest in colonial houses. His paintings have very refined architectural details and strong interplay of light and textures. He infuses plants, animals and human figures into his vibrant composition to dramatize contrast between the old and the new.

Adler Llagas

Adler's entry into the world of art is not only a destiny for him but a choice. Though his early exposure to painting has contributed to his decision to become a painter, it was his desire to make a difference in the field of visual art that keeps him going.

Alder's art traces its influence from Realism - Impressionism as shown in his recent paintings. His fascination with mountains and greeneries is simply an aftermath of his penchant for nature where he is very much exposed to.

Jose "Kimsoy" Yap Jr.

Born on March 7, 1944 in Bindoy, Negros Oriental, Kimsoy graduated from the Cebu Institute of Technology with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Architecture. He then continued and studied painting at the National Academy of Design, School of Fine Arts in New York. Currently, he is one of the teachers at the University of San Carlos and Cebu Academy of Arts.

Having studied at the National Academy of Design, School of Fine Arts in New York, Kimsoy's painting style has traces of western influence. Despite this, an intrinsic Filipino character remains in his works. What is very striking in many of his pieces is his conscious use of line and space. He makes the most of each minute stroke, for example, to bring about the best effect with the color, size and texture of the paper considered. The phrase "less is more" could be applied to some of his works, lending a deeper drama to each of the painting.

Fred Galan

A man with many talents, Fred is an architect, master plumber, photographer and an artist. It is however in the field of painting that he finds more meaning and significance. His art speaks not only of the things of beauty but reflects his deep sensibilities and great faith towards his Creator.

A recipient of many awards and recognitions, Fred believes that life is a gift and as such, it must be used in what God has designed it to be. He said, "As I look back on the many years I spent in painting, I have experienced the joys, the challenges, the frustrations and the rewards as I toiled to better myself in it. I believe that God has gifted me with the ability to paint. It is my desire and prayer that God may use the talent that He gave me as a means of communicating His love, faithfulness, graces, and mercy to others - offering back to Him what He gave to me, to Him all glory and honor belong forever."

Celso Duazo Pepito

Celso believes that "art is not only about beauty but it goes beyond it." He finished a Diploma of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines Cebu College. His paintings are known to contain imagery that is brought to life by crisp and clear lines, bold strokes and his visual use of bright color scheming. The paintings aren't just made of the medium but it can be said that the meaning of the artwork are what completes the painting.

His works are usually made up of three planar divisions, used as backdrops to his modern figural subjects. He has three different explanations for the geometrical partitions. One has to do with strengthening family ties; the second is about the spirit of nationalism, while the third embraces religious spirituality. The use of the octagon symbolizes a spirit of hope and positivism. ?
