Ballet Philippines' Masterworks

CEBU, Philippines - As part of Ballet Philippines’ 40th year celebration, Ballet Philippines performs in Cebu featuring Masterworks, a showcase of the best works that have established Ballet Philippines as the flagship company in ballet and contemporary dance.

From Ballet Philippines’ treasure trove of over 400 works in classical and contemporary dance, Masterworks will feature a rich retrospective of Filipino culture including Agnes Locsin’s neo-ethnic Igorot, a fierce and drum-beating number danced in the unusual combination of g-strings and pointed shoes; Edna Vida’s Ensalada, a mixture of lighthearted tableaus of youthful spontaneity and young love danced to favorite Filipino tunes of Ryan Cayabyab’s “Mamang Kutsero,” “Bakya Mo Neneng” and “Limang Dipang Tao”; Bam Damian’s athletic and acrobatic pas de deux Evacuation; Gaano Kadalas...,a performance of the heartbreak of unrequited love created by the late Tony Fabella; excerpts from the rock opera Tales of the Manuvu as written by Filipino National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera with music by Dero Pedero, Swimming the Ilog Pasig, a moving depiction of the river’s demise by Alden Lugnasin; William Carter’s neo-classical ballet, Bach Concerto; BP Founding Artistic Director Alice Reyes’ Romeo and Juliet; and Denisa Reyes’ timely Te Deum created in 1985 before the EDSA Revolution portraying through dance the struggles and aspirations of the Filipino people.
