PEOPLE PLACES - Flor S. YNCLINO -

When Congressman Benhur Salimbangon, wife Janice and their children were here in California a few moons ago, one of his cousins, Luz Itzel, hosted dinner for them at her home in Marina del Rey. Benhur’s brother Cesar with his two sons Chad and Ken were also here visiting brother Danilo and wife Upe, who are residents of California. So it was sort of a reunion for the Salimbangon siblings. Other relatives who joined them for dinner were Ding Abayabay, Charley and Jasmine, Gary Valiente, Gigi Salimbangon and Fred Ynclino. Like any other gatherings of sort, the dinner lasted way past midnight. After Luz’s party, Fiza Du invited Tito Cesar and the group to dinner at Dave & Buster’s in Spectrum, Irvine the next day.

And speaking of Marina del Rey…the place is a haven of coastal splendor in L.A.’s most convenient location. Close to major freeways and LAX and just a short stroll from Venice beach and Santa Monica, Marina del Rey is beloved for its picturesque harbors, welcoming hotels, thrilling watersports and hip new restaurants. In fact, “The Marina” is more than just a perfect seaside getaway – it’s an ideal launching point for exploring all things LA.

Lately, Marina del Rey is getting hot and for all the right reasons. Angelenos have discovered the community’s newly energized, innovative hotels and restaurants. From five star resorts to family-friendly accommodations, the six Marina hotels appeal to all kinds of travelers. In fact, the Marina offers more value for your travel dollar, as most hotels are right on the water, with romantic sunset views framing thousands of boats in a serene harbor.

Buzz-worthy new restaurants have earned Marina del Rey serious attention on LA’s culinary scene, drawing an increasingly sophisticated clientele. And of course, popular eateries along Washington Boulevard and charming Fisherman’s Village bring in lively crowds every night.

Excitement awaits by land or by sea. During the day, the Pacific beckons. Every type of water sports is offered, from the watercrafts you row, sail or drive to swimming, surfing and sunbathing. Boat charters, deep sea fishing and dinner cruises   offer unique experiences not found anywhere else.

For a day or a week, Marina del Rey is truly LA’s most unique destination. If you’re in Southern California, try to experience the “coastal warmth, LA cool” for yourself. You’ll absolutely love it!

While waiting for my daughter Fiza at Laguna Hills Mall, I met these two elderly ladies – Virginia Keyfel and Louise Murif. They both live purportedly in Leisure World, home for the well-to-do senior citizens in California. The time that I met them they were leaving for a cruise to the Caribbean. Virginia came to Manila in the late sixties with her late husband and stayed at the MacArthur Suite in Manila Hotel. Louise was in Subic twice when her husband was in the US Air Force and later when her son also joined the USAF. Their play bridge and attend a lot of activities despite their being 86 years old and both are still driving. They are neighbors in Leisure World and the best of friends. Oh how wonderful to see these lovely elderly ladies.

Wish they would live to a hundred!
