No sun, no problem

- By: Stacy Danika S. Alcantara -

CEBU, Philippines - The weather has been very much like me lately—fickle and rather gloomy. I can’t help but notice every time I step out of my house how overcast the sky is, how dark and heavy the clouds look, and then, before I could even step inside the jeepney with a coat on my back and an umbrella in hand, the sun suddenly turns up making for a very hot day.

The sunshine doesn’t usually last that long and before I know it, it’s back to a cold and dreary day ushering a mad downpour of rain. It’s been like that the past days which is why it’s almost impossible to step out and have an hour’s fun at outdoor games. The rain has a certain command that the sun does not—it can really make you stay indoors and drum your fingers against the surface of your mom’s wooden table, racking your brains for what to do just to bide the time away—especially on weekends.

Instead of moping and sulking in the corner while waiting for the weather to get any better (it won’t, by the way, unless you’re willing to hibernate until summer), here are some indoor activities worthy of revisiting.

Flick Fest

Your busy skeds may have thrown you apart for the longest time. Reconnect with your closest bud by crashing into your place for a Disney movie marathon. Cozy up with blankets and max out the aircon’s coolness as you pile up on Disney classics like the Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan—everything that’s enough to give you that warm, fluffy nostalgic feel. Don’t forget your half-pound burgers and sodas so you can make that flick fest premier night-worthy.

Light It

One of the things I absolutely adore doing but haven’t been able to find enough time to do so is candle making. This is practically something that makes me love the rainy days. Candle making doesn’t require a host of expensive knickknacks which makes it highly ideal a craft for you to dabble on. Apart from the paraffin or the candle wax, you’ll only need some good ol’ kitchen pots where you can melt the wax. To add a dash of color in your wax, old crayons that you can throw in while “cooking” the wax will do nicely. Molds can come from any kind of heat resistant household object—Pringles containers included. There are no hard and fast rules on the design so you can let your creativity run wild—or you can check out some designs from the internet for inspiration.

Scrapped

Rainy days are best for taking trips down memory lane sans the raincoat and the umbrella, of course. Invite your buds over and ask them to bring snaps of school days past, road trips, and other snippets of memories. Put them all together in a scrapbook complete with other mementos like movie stubs and plane or bus tickets. Jot down some comments with metallic pens and take turns doodling and designing over chips and dips.
