ANG SEPTIYEMBRE UNO SA KATAPUSANG HARI SA SUGBO: Background

CEBU, PHilippines - The 1st of September is a very memorable day for the Cebuanos, as found in the history book, page 79, of “Glimpses in History of Early Cebu,” authored by a Visayan historian, the late Lina Quimat who was president of the Cebu Historical Societry and a history teacher in both University of San Carlos and Cebu Normal University.

Miguel Lopez de Legazpi was driven out of Cebu and from the Visayas island on the first day of September, 1569, by the King of Cebu, Rajah Tumapas. The nightly attack started of this memorable day up to March 23, 1570 wherein the invaders were driven to Panay with the aid of the Portuguese and then to Manila in the ensuing years.

This is also supported by another Visayan historian from Siliman University, Reverend Valentino Sitoy Jr. in his book “A History of Christianity in the Philippines – The Initial Encounter.”
