All Things Bride and Beautiful

- Bobit S. Avila -

CEBU, Philippines - “You can see it in their eyes, the sparkle that only comes from being in love,” brazenly declared designer Marichu Tan, recounting her countless brides’ countenance on their big day. Though the current economic climate does not make it easy to grow a high-end label, more so a bridal line, the bridal business can’t just be disregarded. After all, designers offer every conceivable option for each bride.

Most recently, through the efforts of lady governor Gwendolyn Garcia, whose own daughter recently tied the knot garbed in a chic Arcy Gayatin, Cebu’s recognizable and respected designers unveiled their bridal collections in a fashion extravaganza dubbed One Cebu Expo at the Museo Sugbo. And indeed, options reigned supreme. A favorite point of reference for designers that drew inspiration was that of the current season from the white summer nights of our tropical island, a disorienting phenomenon that led to a blurring between light and pale hues, reality and dreams. This translated into a full spectrum of refined collection suited for every modern bride.

Arcy Gayatin romanticized her model bride even more with a lacy column dress which also echoed in Ren Manabat’s corseted lace bouffant gown. Textured and cutting edge was Marichu Tan’s serpentine bridal dress of cobweb-like patterns. More textures and origami inspired was the Philip Rodriguez strapless duchesse satin gown while Albert Arriba envisioned a terno-clad bride with a fitted silhouette. Shades of Chanel was Edwin Alba’s blush free flowing wedding dress with a solitary feathered headpiece, while Philip Tampus channeled his nostalgic notions with a belle epoch tulle wedding dress. Iberian inspired was Felix Yu’s infanta wedding dress while a Grecian goddess walked in Salvador Malto’s portion in a white and gold jersey dress. The blurring also took the form of a proportion play-off, which worked well in Humberto Villegas’ quasi-tiered tube dress that finished off in a sweeping trail. To complement the brides were dashing grooms in piña and organdy barongs from Edwin Ao and Philip Rodriguez, respectively.
