Hari ng Negros storms Cebu's party scene

- Ritche T. Salgado -

CEBU, Philippines – Last June 9, it was party all night with the princes of the 2009 Hari ng Negros, first at Vudu in the Crossroads and then capping the night at YO.U in One Mango Ave.

Just in time, Vudu was celebrating Vudueoke Tuesdays where guests are given the chance to take the stage and show their singing prowess in front of the jam-packed party den. Who would have believed that in the middle of a working week people would be partying all night? A trailblazing concept, Vudu tapped the Cebuanos weakness for singing by opening their doors, no door charge and no dress code, to the music loving crowd. While there, try out the ultra buttery and oozing Baked Oysters and down it with Below Zero San Mig Light, Pilsen or Strong Ice. This would surely lubricate your vocal cords as you prepare for you turn to sing.

The crowd is as diverse as the songs that Vudu’s music machine spews. There’s the more mature bunch that would make Rey Valera beam with pride, and then there’s the horde of young professionals that could never get enough of BEP or Lady Gaga. When it comes to songs, their list ranges from songs of long forgotten era to the newest and hippest beats that had hit the dance floors; and from songs of the broken hearted to the jovial anthem of the happy lot.

Nearing midnight, we had to simmer down and so we hit the road off to uptown’s “the place to be seen,” YO.U. Enjoying the company of friends with a pail-full (or two, or three) of beer and a serving of YO.U’s signature whole fried chicken and crispy pata, the partyphiles settled in as familiar faces crowded the artsy watering hole. The best way to end the night (or was it dawn already?).
