Touching 90
CEBU, Philippines - As classical music from the Spanish guitar of virtuoso Ernie Vasquez filled the Manila Room of the MarcoPolo Plaza Hotel, my mom, dressed in a red beaded silk pant suit, was all smiles and beaming with joy as she graciously welcomed her almost 90 gift bearing guests of all ages. They included her sister Josefa who came in from Leyte and childhood friends such as Hank Aboitiz and his wife Lulu, Paquito Borromeo who was escorted by his daughter Bess, españolas Julina Muertegui, and Marichu Garcia, cousins Itos Alvarez and his wife Edi, Nena Garcia with a cane in hand but living life to the fullest, Washington State residents Jay and Winnie Harris, and dear friend Loring Ford.
With a copa of sparkling champagne in hand, los invitados immediately exchanged besitos y unos abrazos. Everyone more than just knew everybody else. There were no strangers, absolutely none at all
It was a wonderful surprise for everyone when Cebuana singer Pilita Corrales, who happens to be my moms idol, entered the ballroom and rendered a moving Spanish song. Her repertoire also included a medley of the Platters and a few Visayan songs.
My brothers Edu, Cisco and Ramon gamely took to the stage and courageously did a duet with Asia’s Queen of songs.
Not to be outdone was Hank Aboitiz who lip sung while Romy Ronquillo proudly exhibited his prowess in dancing.
After blowing out the birthday candles on the two-tiered chocolate cake lovingly created by baker Marissa Unchuan, Venus Guilas, the efficient and always ready to help banquet sales executive of Marco Polo Plaza, presented my mom with a beautiful bouquet of blue roses.
It was a most enjoyable evening made more meaningful as the celebrant was surrounded by guests who traveled from near and far away to help celebrate this milestone.
Sincere appreciation and thanks to General Manager Hans Hauri who graciously extended assistance in all the preparations.
