The Freeman at 89!

PEOPLE PLACES - Flor S. YNCLINO -

Of course, “nobody knows Cebu better than The FREEMAN” which has been in existence for the last 89 years. Nobody but nobody can beat the life and breadth of this prestigious newspaper. The FREEMAN was established by former Assemblyman Paulino Gullas in 1919. However, the newspaper closed shop during the war. It was Dr. Jose “Dodong” Gullas, Don Paulino’s nephew, who revived the newspaper.

Last July 18, The FREEMAN marked its 89th anniversary with a Thanksgiving Mass and a sumptuous lunch. Held at the new and spanking building, president and CEO Miguel Belmonte was in attendance to celebrate with all the employees – editors, writers, columnists and workers of The FREEMAN. Sir Miguel as he is fondly called by all, got a “makabungog” cheers and applause from the guys and gals of the newspaper.

But we missed our chairman, Dodong Gullas, during the fellowship as he and his wife, Mrs. Nena Gullas, were in Australia attending the World Youth Day celebration where the world-class UV Chorale performed with élan.
