My Slippers and I

- Nichole Ang -

I wore my slippers everywhere last summer. I wore it to school, to the mall, to church, to every single place I’ve been. I traveled out of Cebu for the first time and partied for four days in Bantayan Island with nothing more than a bikini and those slippers. I organized a fund raiser, and was up on my feet for two nights in the same flip flops. I pretty much lived in, and lived it up in my slippers.

My puppy-chewed, half-presentable flip flops took me from point A to point B and everywhere else in between the whole summer. They went with me to every racket and money-making scheme I pulled. I wait out the Banilad-Talamban traffic in them, and on more than one occasion I walked to Foodland from USC-TC in them just to cut down my travel time. My slippers carried me through blistering asphalt and flooded sidewalks and it never gave up on me nor retaliated. It just bore the torture of everyday use, misuse, abuse and overuse. It never let me down.

So why wax poetic over a pair of ordinary flip flops? Only because the month of June is here and is bringing with it the undying “pleasure” of going back to wearing black leather shoes with scratchy uniforms, that’s all. After three months of living the lifestyle of the nearly-barefoot, I can safely assume that my tanned toes are going to miss the freedom of my rubber slippers immensely, and frankly, so will I. Because my slippers, as cheap as they may be, have taken me to places far beyond any of my other shoes ever can, and I had a hell of a trip in them.

So, where did your favorite slippers take you last summer?
