SWU’s Obra Kultura

THEDANCE&THENSOME - Michaed Dax Barlaan -

The Southwestern University Graduate School of Health Science, Management and Pedagogy, under the brilliance of Dean Rouel Longinos, together with Dr. Merlie Concepcion, Dr. Bryan Acar, Dr.Richard Ruelan, and  staff, presented Obra Kultura, a showcase of original dances and theme songs of 1986 People Power, in celebration of the Culture and Arts month and Edsa Youth Day on the 25th last month.

Three choreography highlights were subject to panel scrutiny. These were the qualitative output of then candidates for completion for a degree in Masters and Doctor of Physical Education (respectively) Joselito Caballero, Angelica Yvonne Uy and Rafael Matutinao.

Depart from the ordinary.

Caballero, after researching on Sinulog practices and evolution, delved the subject with a fantastic “Journey in Dreams with Señor Sto. Niño,” an insightful showcase of good versus evil with the Patron’s divine intervention involving a child dreaming its course in lala land.

Uy’s recreation of Carcar’s shoemaking industry through artistic expressions of body movements in rythmic fashion was effective.

On top of it all, the genius of Matutinao awakened the Cebuano audience through interpretive dances of Visayan melody most especially in the comic rendition of a couple in “Pasayawa Ko Day.” Before spectators could master the girl’s reply “sayaw lang sa uban...,” Aznar coliseum was filled with laughter apparently provoked by the visual presentation of the ludicrous duo.

Dynamic research culture and Quality output.

Obra Kultura was one of the most ambitious yet attainable endeavors of the college which ruled out quality learning over many setbacks such as expense, time constraint or limited human resources. Now that’s dynamism and real quality output.

Way to go, SWU Graduate School. Kudos!
