Velez College’s “Tinikling” Festival

For the very first time in their lives, these freshmen Physical Education students of Velez College, under the masterful tutelage of Professor Brigette Lao,were subjected to a “new field” – “Tinikling” cultural dancing, a task to comply for their semi-finals.

The assignment was so new to them considering their claim that such dance discipline was never introduced during their elementary and secondary years in their respective schools.

“Tinikling” was famous only from their reading sources but never with a practical approach.

Taking the challenge, they delved into bookshelves, video footage and hired professional choreographers to assist them with their routines.

The result was an astounding pot-potpourri of “Tinikling” performances that may have rivaled any existing dance troupes of this city.

And the winners were, Nursing 1B in first place with Nursing 1C, 1F and 1D trailing respectively and besting over six more groups.

Congratulations and more power!

Reader’s note: “Tinikling” is a Filipino cultural dance from Leyte inspired by the movement of the tikling bird and its trap.
